The challenge

One trip, four decisions

No digital product covered the full camping-rental experience — from choosing gear to returning it. The core design challenge was helping users juggle place, vehicle, dates, and group size all at once, without overwhelming the very people the product is meant to help relax.

Research

What people actually wanted

I ran 5–10 in-depth interviews and a survey of 20–50 respondents to understand how people rent and use camping gear today.

Existing options — physical rental shops and buying gear outright — failed on the three things that mattered most: speed, flexibility, and door-to-door service.

Key research insight

The solution

A two-stage product

  • Stage 1 — Web ordering flow. One big, intimidating decision is broken into four calm micro-decisions: where you're going, your vehicle, your dates, and your group size.
  • Stage 2 — In-field app. A mobile companion that stays useful after checkout: location-based treks and step-by-step tutorials for using each piece of gear.

The web flow

Ordering, without the overwhelm

Design decisions

Calm, curated, useful after checkout

  • Progressive disclosure keeps the ordering flow feeling light — you only ever face one question at a time.
  • Curated packages (Basic · Premium · VIP) let people choose fast and confidently instead of assembling a kit from scratch.
  • A companion that earns its place on the home screen — navigation to the trailhead plus how-to-use-the-gear guidance in the field.
